      The Four Directions

The 4 Quarters, Directions, and Elements

The 4 Quarters are each represented by an element, a direction, a color, a time of day, a time of year, and an aspect of self.

Please note that these correspondences are designed at present for the Northern Hemisphere. Certain elements reverse in the Southern Hemisphere, and correspondences for that hemisphere will be added to this site at a later time.

      North

      Earth
      Green
      Night
      Winter
      Body

This is the direction of stability, permanence, and the material world.  This is the quarter of age, and accumulated wisdom;  it is often associated with the Crone Goddess, or the elder wise God, like Odin or the Myrddin.

      East

      Air
      Yellow (or lavender)
      Morning
      Spring
      Mind

This is the direction of fleetness, rapidity, and flight, whether of the imagination or the intellect.  Communication is represented by this quarter, as is language and mathematics.  This quarter is often associated with the young Maiden Goddess images, or the young fleet God, like Hermes or Aries.

      South

      Fire
      Red
      Noon
      Summer
      Will or Spirit

This is the direction of constant change, the burning of one element to fuel the fire of another.  This is the quarter of passion and sensuality, and irrevocable change.  This quarter is often associated with the Warrior Goddess of active change, like Sekhmet, and the Satyr God Pan of passionate sexual love.
